Telehealth flexibilities face a Sept. 30 deadline as Congress debates a short-term funding deal
Hospice & Home Health F2F telehealth could expire next week without enacted funding—prepare now. Extensions look likely but not locked. Avoid disruption by auditing Hospice & Home Health F2F timelines now, informing clinicians and patients, and sending Congress your support for permanent telehealth.
Telehealth flexibilities are set to expire on September 30th when the government will shut down unless Congress passes an appropriations bill to keep it open. These flexibilities have been in place since the public health emergency (PHE) and have been extended as part of government spending authorizations. These flexibilities apply to the Hospice and Home Health Face to Face (F2F).
However, a Continuing Resolution was unveiled on Tuesday by Republicans which extends government funding through November 21st , 2025 and includes extension of all telehealth flexibilities (Hospice F2F & Home Health F2F). And Congressional Democrats unveiled their own version last night, which also includes telehealth extensions.
This is positive news that both versions include an extension, however the debate in Congress on keeping the government funded is uncertain, and it's unclear what agreement the parties will come to and enacted into law. Because of that, HCA encourages its members to prepare in the event that these flexibilities lapse (even if temporarily during a government shutdown). Reviewing your F2F encounter due dates for Hospice and home health - and making your practitioners and patients aware that telehealth flexibilities may expire, so that they can plan ahead if necessary.
HCA will continue to update members as this process unfolds in the lead up to September 30th.
Use this advocacy alert to email your Members of Congress urging they make telehealth flexibilities permanent for home health and hospice.
